A woman from Rio de Janeiro, Guiomar Pereira Xavier, brought the name to Guarulhos and became the new club's godmother, in a city that until then had no senior football team of its own. The year was 1954, and the founders copied almost everything from the Rio original except its bird: instead of the hawk that flies over the Maracanã, they put a crow on the crest, and the nickname stuck.

For two decades the club barely left the local amateur scene, but it owned it — seven straight Campeonato Guarulhense titles from 1969 to 1975, then five more in the Liga Guarulhense through the 1980s. Professional football came later: a first taste of the fifth division in 1979, full professional status only in 1998. The best of what came next was a third-place finish in Série A2 in 2002, then the Série A3 title in 2008. Relegation undid some of that later, in 2017 and again in 2023.

The Sub-20 side draws on the same coaching staff as the seniors — Rodrigo Cabral moved between the professional bench and the youth categories in 2025, and Paulo Pereira now runs the first team. Players such as Emanuel Vitor have come through the age group without yet making the jump to a bigger club, and in the 2026 Paulista Sub-20 the squad met Tanabi and Capivariano. In 2003 the seniors travelled further than most of the club's rivals ever have, beating Nejmeh 3-0 in a friendly in Beirut.

Guarulhos still calls the fixture against its old city rival by name — the Derby Guarulhense — and both sides play close to where Flamengo have always been based, the Estádio Municipal Antônio Soares de Oliveira, a ground that holds 6,235 in the club's red and black.
