Golden Arrows U23

Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, Durban, holds about 6,500. Most of what happens there for this side is reserve football, played by young men on the way to the first team of Lamontville Golden Arrows, the senior club that dates from 1943 and was re-established in 1996.

The under-23 team has a shorter history. It was formed in 2014 so that the club could enter the first season of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, the national reserve league for clubs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). It won that league in 2015/16 and again in 2017/18. In the 2018/19 season it added the Diski Shield, beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the final. Siboniso Conco scored both goals, and he was also named Player of the Season for that campaign.

Several players from this system have moved up to the senior squad, among them Velemseni Ndwandwe, Andile Fikizolo and Siyanda Ndlovu. Its nickname, Abafana Bes'thende, translates as the Backheel Boys.

The fixtures with the most edge are against AmaZulu, the other Durban club, in the Durban Derby. Maritzburg United supply the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) derby. The team's colours are green, yellow and white, and its job remains what it was in 2014: to prepare players for the first team.
