Baroka, Sekhukhune United and Black Leopards share a province with Polokwane City, and the Limpopo Derby is what the reserve side inherits along with the shirt. The under-23 team plays in the DStv Diski Challenge, the league set up in 2014 for the reserve sides of Premier Soccer League clubs, and it carries the orange, black and white of the senior club. It has no founding date of its own.

The parent club's own story starts elsewhere. Volkswagen South Africa bought the franchise of Maritzburg United in 2006 and moved it to Port Elizabeth as Bay United. The side won promotion to the Premier Soccer League through the play-offs in 2007–08. In 2010 the club was sold to Julia Lerato Mogaladi, and in August 2012 the league approved its renaming as Polokwane City. It took the nickname "Rise and Shine". Its two National First Division titles, in 2012–13 and 2022–23, came as a second-tier side.

The youth side has yet to match that. It has won nothing in the Diski Challenge and finished 15th in 2025/26, in the lower half of the table for a second season running. The club's first-team players Thabang Matuludi, Oswin Appollis and Puleng Tlolane are described as signings or local talents, not as products of the academy.

The ground is the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, which holds about 16,000. For logistical reasons the senior team sometimes moves to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, which holds about 45,500, or to Seshego Stadium.

The fixtures that matter most stay within Limpopo. Matches against Baroka, Sekhukhune United (formerly Magesi) and Black Leopards are grouped together as the Limpopo Derby.
