The men's section traces its results back to 1961, when the side, then representing the Institute of Physical Culture, took its first national title. What followed was a run built under Prof. Pencho Shterev.

The club as it exists now, HK NSA, was registered as its own legal entity in 1992. The men added a second Cup in 1996, then reached another final in 2008, losing it. The championship itself has stayed out of reach since 1990, with third-place finishes in 1990/91 and 2001/02 marking the nearest approaches. The women's team matched the men's Cup record with wins in the same two years, 1991 and 1996.

NSA has taken that record beyond Bulgaria twice, entering the EHF Cup Winners' Cup in 1996/97 and again in 2008/09. Assoc. Prof. Emil Avramov now coaches the club.
