About

The A Group stands as the premier men's handball competition in Bulgaria, operating at the apex of the national pyramid. Governed by the Bulgarian Handball Federation (BHF), the league has defined the sport's highest level since its inception in 1961. The structure separates the elite from the rest, with the lowest-placed teams slipping into the B Group, a tier divided into regional zones including Mizia/Vitosha, Chernomore, and Trakia. Success in those lower divisions feeds back up through a final tournament for promotion spots.

The competition format centres on a regular season that culminates in a championship playoff known as the Super Final. This decisive stage determines the national champion, a title currently held by Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa following their victory over HC Shumen 61 in the 2024-2025 series. The immediate landscape includes clubs such as Chardafon Gabrovo, Dobrudja, Fregata Burgas, HK Levski Sofia, and NSA Sofia, competing for supremacy in the domestic game.

Historical dominance is concentrated among a select few. HC Lokomotiv Varna holds the record for the most titles with 12, edging CSKA Sofia and VIF Dimitrov Sofia, who each possess 10 honours. The league's evolution saw significant shifts, notably the introduction of indoor play and round-robin systems during the 1977/1978 season. The governing body itself traces its roots to 1958, when it began as the Republican Section for Handball before adopting its current name in 1962. For the 2025-2026 campaign, the competition features ten teams battling for the crown.

The path to glory is clear: survive the regular season and conquer the Super Final. While many clubs have risen through the ranks, the gap between the top tier and the regional B Group remains distinct. The federation continues to oversee a system where the best teams meet annually to decide who rules the court.
