Exeter hold nerve to end winless run
Exeter City beat Accrington Stanley 2-0 in the second round of League Two on Saturday afternoon. Jack Fitzwater opened the scoring in the second minute before Seamus Conneely turned the ball into his own net thirteen minutes later. The visitors had been unbeaten in three but that run came to an end on the road to Devon.
Exeter kept their advantage through a disciplined display. They earned nine corners to one but managed only five shots on target. Accrington held 64 per cent of possession and completed 301 passes yet found a way through just twice.
The statistics tell the story of a match decided by efficiency rather than volume. Exeter registered 26 per cent shot accuracy against 14 per cent for the hosts. They made 125 successful passes from 232 attempts while Accrington completed 301 of 421.
Five yellow cards were shown across the ninety minutes. Josh Woods received the first caution in the forty-fifth minute before Jayden Wareham and Vincent Harper went to the referee in the second half. The substitutions began in the sixty-third minute when Shaun Whalley came on for Exeter.
The result leaves Exeter fifteenth with four points from four games. Accrington remain twenty-third on two points after four matches. The hosts had lost their last two league outings before this victory.
