Match report

Motherwell saw off HJK Helsinki 2:0 in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League at Fir Park on Wednesday evening. The hosts took control of the tie after a draw a week earlier, with Ibrahim Said scoring twice to put the Scottish side firmly in charge of the next stage.

Said struck first just before the break, finding the net in the forty-seventh minute after a period of sustained pressure. HJK had looked comfortable enough in the opening half, but Motherwell's intensity shifted when Said broke through. To be fair, the visitors had weathered the storm until that moment, but the goal changed the complexion of the encounter entirely.

The second came in the sixtieth, and by then the match was effectively settled. Said completed his brace with a clinical finish that left HJK's defence scrambling. The Finnish side had made changes — Tikkanen, Borchers and Haarala all came on — but the damage had been done. Motherwell held on grimly after that, and the clean-sheet run came to an end for HJK's hopes of progression.

There was an edge to the contest from the start, marked by yellow cards for Alfie Cicale and Alexander Ring. The discipline wasn't terrible, but there were moments where tempers flared under the pressure of a European qualifier. Motherwell's substitutions were more measured — Priestman, Koutroumbis and Charles-Cook — while HJK threw on four changes in quick succession, including Ring himself.

The statistics tell a story Motherwell deserved to write. Eighty-two attacks against sixty-eight for HJK, but more telling was the accuracy: four shots on target to one, with twenty-four per cent efficiency compared to ten. The shots off target tell the same tale — Motherwell took more chances and found the target more often. HJK won seven corners to three, but corners mean nothing when you cannot finish.

The result moves Motherwell closer to the group stage, while HJK must now navigate back to Finland with a deficit to overcome. The visitors had drawn 1-1 at Fir Park just six days ago, but this time there was no escape. Motherwell made the difference when it mattered, and Said's double will do the talking for weeks.
