Newcastle Croatia overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 against Wallsend Red Devils in the NPL Northern New South Wales semi-finals on Saturday evening. The visitors, who had drawn 6-6 and lost 3-1 in their previous two meetings with the hosts this month, came from behind to secure their place in the final.
Wallsend took control early, striking through a goal at the 10-minute mark before extending their lead just before half-time. A second strike came in the 45th minute plus three, and the home side went into the break 2-0 up, looking comfortable in the semi-final tie.
The momentum shifted at the break. Newcastle pulled one back in the 50th minute, the very first minute of the second period, and then went for the jugular. They equalised at 64 and completed the turnaround with a third goal at 68, seeing the game out despite the frantic finish.
These two sides have a habit of producing open games. The 6-6 draw earlier this month was followed by a 3-1 victory for Newcastle, and this encounter continued the pattern of goals rather than tactical caution. By then the home side had been caught flat-footed, unable to respond to the quick succession of away goals.
The result means Newcastle Croatia progress to the NPL Northern New South Wales final, while Wallsend Red Devils' campaign comes to an end at the semi-final stage.
