FC Lugano

Valon Behrami came through the Lugano academy and made his first-team debut in 2002, one of several careers that started in Ticino and moved on to bigger leagues. Pietro Anastasi went the other way: a year after winning the World Cup with Italy in 1970, he signed for Lugano in 1971, a rare case of a champion arriving rather than leaving.

The club was formed in Lugano, in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, on 28 July 1908, and its black-and-white kit still gives it the nickname Bianconeri.

Home matches were played for decades at the Stadio di Cornaredo, closed in 2026. Lugano has since moved to the AIL Arena, which holds 8,793 for domestic fixtures and 8,093 once UEFA's stricter rules apply.

Within the canton, matches against FC Chiasso and AC Bellinzona are known as the Derby del Ticino, a name hockey supporters use as well, for the meetings between HC Lugano and HC Ambrì-Piotta.

Lugano's championships all fall either side of the Second World War: 1937/38, 1940/41 and 1948/49. The Swiss Cup has come more often since, in 1930/31, 1967/68, 1992/93 and 2021/22, alongside the Intertoto Cup in 1967/68. Four times — 1960/61, 1963/64, 1987/88 and 2014/15 — the club has had to win the second tier outright just to get back among Switzerland's elite.

No league title has followed the one from 1948/49.
