Five league titles in a row, 2010 to 2014, is not something Slovenian basketball had seen before or has seen since. Aleksandar Džikić built that run, and in the middle of it the club won something no Slovenian side had managed: the 2011 FIBA EuroChallenge, with Goran Ikonić named MVP of the Final Four. Eight years earlier, under Ivan Sunara, Krka had taken its first league championship in 2000 and later reached the 2003 ULEB Cup final.

Seven league titles and four Slovenian Cups make Krka the most decorated club in the country since independence. The cups came later and in a different shape — 2014, 2015, 2016, 2021 — a run that outlasted the Džikić era and kept the club at the top of the domestic game even as the league titles dried up after 2014.

Matjaž Smodiš came up through the club's own academy before an NBA career and a spell at CSKA Moscow; Krka still calls him one of its own. Jaka Lakovič spent a single season in Novo Mesto on his way to becoming a EuroLeague name. Against Helios Domžale, the games get called a derby whenever both sides sit near the top of the table.

The club was founded in 1948 as KK Novo mesto Partizan, became Novoteks in 1963, then simply KK Novo mesto in 1992, before a sponsorship deal with the pharmaceutical company Krka gave it its current name in 1997.
