About
The Olympic Games Women volleyball tournament is a quadrennial global event that stands above all other international competitions in prestige. It was introduced by the International Volleyball Federation and the International Olympic Committee at the Tokyo Games in 1964, marking the first time a team sport for women appeared in the Olympic programme. While the Volleyball Nations League operates annually and the World Championship follows a biennial cycle, this tournament remains exclusive due to its four-year interval and historic status as the pinnacle of the sport.
The competition features twelve national teams competing in a structured format. Participants are split into three pools of four for a preliminary round-robin stage. Progression to the knockout phase requires finishing in the top two of a pool or securing a spot as one of the two best third-placed teams. This structure has been stable since 1992, though earlier editions saw variations in the number of participating nations. Qualification pathways have evolved over time; for the latest edition, slots were allocated to the host nation, through regional ranking qualifiers, and via universality selection designed to include underrepresented continents.
Success in the tournament is shared among several historic powers. Cuba, China, Brazil, and the Soviet Union have each claimed three gold medals across different decades. The current reigning champion is Italy, who secured their first title by defeating the United States in the final. Japan earned the inaugural honour in 1964, while Brazil won a decisive final in London in 2012. The event continues to distinguish itself from commercial leagues through its strict adherence to the Olympic calendar and its position as the ultimate prize in international volleyball.
