HIFK Helsinki edged Inter Turku 2-1 at Bolt Arena on Tuesday in a Championship Group fixture. The result flipped the outcome of their meeting just four days earlier, when Inter had secured a 1-0 win. It was a match decided in fragments rather than flowing from start to finish.
Inter took the lead through Prosper Ahiabu in the thirty-sixth minute, a moment that suggested they might repeat their recent form. HIFK responded with two substitutions on the hour mark, bringing on Martin Kirilov and Mouhamed Gueye. By then the hosts were pressing for an equaliser, and Mads Borchers found one in the fifty-third minute.
The turning point came later, when Kaius Simojoki netted in the eighty-first minute to put HIFK ahead. Inter had made changes of their own, bringing on Albin Granlund and Bismark Ampofo, but the visitors could not find a response. Simojoki's goal shifted the momentum entirely, and HIFK saw the game out.
HIFK dominated possession at 53 per cent and registered eight shots on target compared to Inter's three. They created one big chance each, but their shot accuracy of 31 per cent meant chances went begging. Inter were more precise with 43 per cent accuracy, yet that precision was not enough against HIFK's persistence.
Three yellow cards were shown, two to Inter and one to HIFK's Pyry Mentu. The match was physical without being ugly, and by the end HIFK had held on despite Inter's attempts to respond. We had tipped an away win with 37 per cent confidence, but the match took a different path.
The result moves HIFK closer to the top four, while Inter remain second with 42 points. HIFK sit on 37 after 22 games, four points behind the visitors. It was not a statement victory, but it was enough to keep HIFK in contention.
