Académico Viseu open the season in the Primeira Liga, back in Portuguese football's top flight after finishing second in Liga Portugal 2 in 2025-26, following earlier spells there in 1978 and 1980.

The badge traces to 1914, when students at Viseu's lyceum and college formed Sport Clube Académico. The name changed twice in the years that followed, and the black-and-white kit still worn today comes from that original student side. In 2005 the old club, by then known as CAF, was wound up under financial pressure. An administrative committee struck a deal with GD Farminhão, a local club that took on the name Académico de Viseu Futebol Clube along with the badge, colours and history of the side it replaced.

Home games are played at the Estádio do Fontelo, which holds 6,912. Regionally, Académico Viseu have won the AF Viseu league 17 times; nationally, the closest it has come to silverware since has been a Taça de Portugal semi-final in 2019-20 and a Taça da Liga semi-final in 2022-23.
