The club that plays it came out of a gymnastics club, Turnverein 1860 Fürth, and set up on its own in 1906, three years after the footballers had first organised themselves in 1903. Two later mergers reshaped it. The 1996 tie-up with TSV Vestenbergsgreuth gave the club the name it carries now.

The three German championships came in 1914, 1926 and 1929, and around them Fürth won the Süddeutscher Pokal five times between 1918 and 1927 — still the record.

What followed was longer and quieter. The 2. Bundesliga title in 2012 carried Fürth into the top flight for the first time, with Olivier Occéan finishing that season as leading scorer. The Sportpark Ronhof | Thomas Sommer holds 16,626 and has changed sponsor names more than once.

The DFB-Pokal has never been won. The nearest Fürth came was the semi-final of 2011–12, lost to Borussia Dortmund in extra time.
