Fifty Uruguayan championships is a number Club Nacional reaches by counting eras rather than seasons: eleven of them came before the game turned professional, the rest since, most recently in 2025. Three Copa Libertadores wins, in 1971, 1980 and 1988, each converted into an Intercontinental Cup a few months later.

The club formed on 14 May 1899 out of a merger between Uruguay Athletic Club and Montevideo Football Club, and took its white, blue and red from the flag of José Gervasio Artigas. It has never changed that name, and it has never left the ground it moved into the following year. Estadio Gran Parque Central , opened on 25 May 1900, is the oldest football stadium still in use anywhere in the Americas, though that runs to 34,361 for domestic games and drops to 28,251 when CONMEBOL's international restrictions apply. A 2025 plan approved expansion past 40,000.

It also produced Atilio García, the top scorer in the history of both the club and the derby itself. In 2020, the club lost another player, Juan Izquierdo, who collapsed of cardiac arrest during a match in Brazil.

Nacional opened its ranks to working-class players in 1911. What has stayed constant since is the record: 50 league titles.
