The Basketball Championship of Bosnia and Herzegovina, known as the Premijer liga BiH, serves as the top-tier domestic men's professional basketball league. It operates under the governance of the Basketball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (KSBiH). The competition traces its origins to 1992 but functioned as fragmented entity-based leagues before establishing a unified national championship in the 1999–2000 season.
The league currently features 15 teams competing in a regular season format. This phase follows a double round-robin structure before transitioning into playoffs. The post-season play typically involves top teams from the regular season entering best-of-three series for the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. The 2024–25 season saw Igokea win the title by defeating Bosna in the finals.
A defining characteristic of the league is its promotion and relegation system, which reflects the country's political structure. The second tier comprises three entity-specific leagues: the A1 Liga, the Liga Herceg-Bosne, and the First League of Republika Srpska. Champions from these divisions are promoted to the top tier, subject to licensing requirements. Conversely, the bottom teams from the Premijer liga BiH drop into the corresponding entity league. In the last season, the bottom three teams faced direct relegation.
Unlike many domestic competitions, this league has a distinct relationship with the regional ABA League First Division. Clubs such as Igokea and Borac Banja Luka compete in both the domestic league and the ABA League. Membership in the regional competition is not automatic for the domestic champion; it relies on sporting merit, financial stability, and infrastructure criteria. While the domestic league determines the national champion, the ABA League provides international exposure and qualification for European competitions like the EuroCup or FIBA Europe Cup.
The most successful clubs in the post-independence era are Igokea and HKK Široki, each holding 11 titles. Other notable clubs include Bosna, which holds records from the Yugoslav era, and Radnik Bijeljina. The league serves as a critical pathway for players and clubs seeking to compete at a higher level within the region.
