Celta Women

The fixture that defines Celta's women is the one against Ensino Lugo, known as the Derbi Ensino-Celta or the Derbi Galego de Baloncesto Femenino. It sets Vigo against Lugo, and it carries weight because Celta's basketball goes back further than the club that plays it today.

The original Celta section won the Liga Femenina in 1977, 1979 and 1982. It also took the Copa de la Reina in 1981, 1982 and 1984, and in 1982 it won league and cup in the same season. The current club started from a purchase. In the summer of 1996 José Manuel Gómez Carballo bought the place of Juventud Astur (Aucalsa) of Oviedo, and Celta had a women's team again. In 1998 an agreement between Bosco and Celta formally restored the women's tradition under the Celta name.

Results arrived quickly. Celta won the Liga Femenina in 1999 and 2000 and played the EuroLeague group stage in 1999-2000. The Copa de la Reina followed in 2001.

Tamara Abalde belongs to the next generation. She made her debut in 2004 at 15 and later played for Spain at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Alba Torrens joined in 2006 and went on to win five EuroLeague titles. Laura Nicholls arrived a year later and also went to Beijing with the national team.

The team plays in the Pabellón Polideportivo de Navia, which holds 1,460 spectators, 392 of them on mobile stands.

The most recent silverware came in the second tier. Celta won Liga Femenina 2 Group A in 2017-18 and again in 2018-19. Both times they lost in the playoffs and stayed down.
