Palencia Baloncesto

Palencia's fixture against Grupo Ureta Tizona Burgos is the Derbi Castellano, the Castilian derby. The rivalry belongs to a club that spent most of its existence in the lower divisions of Spanish basketball.

Palencia won the third-tier LEB Plata in 2008–09, together with that division's cup. That squad included Nikola Mirotić, on loan from Real Madrid for 2009–10, a name the club still cites. In 2015–16 they won the second division, LEB Oro, then resigned the promotion to the ACB, the top flight, for financial reasons.

The step came seven years later. In 2022–23 Palencia finished second in LEB Oro and won the promotion playoffs, reaching the ACB for the first time. The season that followed, 2023–24, went badly. They finished 18th and last with 6 wins and 28 losses and went back down to Primera FEB. Vítor Benite was the player the side leaned on most that year.

Palencia has carried several sponsors' names, among them Quesos Cerrato, Chocolates Trapa and Zunder, and now Súper Agropal. The nickname has stayed the same: Los Morados, the Purples, after the home shirt. The 5,204-seat Pabellón Municipal de Deportes was once named after the athlete Marta Domínguez.

The club began in 1979 as Club Deportivo Maristas Palencia, a school team at the Colegio Marista. The professional side followed in 1997.
