About

The Major Club Emerging 3-Day Tournament is a domestic cricket competition in Sri Lanka organized by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). It serves as a youth development pathway, positioned below the senior Major Club League and the National Super League. The tournament is designed for emerging talents, primarily players under the age of 23 or 24, with specific squad rules allowing a maximum of two players aged 24–28. Its primary purpose is to bridge the gap between junior cricket (such as the Under-19 World Cup squads) and senior professional cricket.

The specific "Major Club Emerging 3-Day Tournament" format was inaugurated in the 2021/22 season, commencing in February 2022. This marked a return to the 3-day first-class format for this specific emerging category, having been played as a 50-over limited-overs tournament in previous years (e.g., 2016, 2019). The 2022 edition featured 26 clubs divided into four groups (A, B, C, D). The structure involves a league stage with 2-day matches, followed by a knockout phase (quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final) played over 3 days. The top teams from each group advance to the knockouts.

There is no formal promotion or relegation system between the Emerging Tournament and the senior Major Club League. Participation is based on club eligibility and player age criteria rather than league standing. The same major clubs (e.g., Badureliya, Moors, NCC, SSC) participate in both tiers, but the Emerging tournament is strictly an age-grade competition.

Winners are limited to recent years due to the tournament's rebranding/format change. Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club won the inaugural 3-day edition in 2021/22, defeating Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club by 44 runs in the final. In 2023, Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) and Police Sports Club were declared joint champions after the final was washed out by rain. Historical data for editions prior to 2022 is fragmented, as earlier iterations were limited-overs tournaments. The tournament distinguishes itself from the senior Major Club 3-Day Tournament through its strict age restrictions and developmental focus, acting as a critical feeder system for national team selection.
