The Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament serves as Sri Lanka’s premier club-level List A cricket competition. Organized by Sri Lanka Cricket, the event sits just below the National Super League Limited Over Tournament in the domestic hierarchy. It operates with a fixed membership of 'Premier' clubs, meaning there is no promotion or relegation between tiers. Inclusion relies on administrative and infrastructural criteria rather than purely sporting merit.

The competition was established for the 2020–21 season. This initiative marked a rebranding and restructuring of the Premier Limited Overs Tournament, which had been active since 1988. The inaugural edition took place in March–April 2021. The format has evolved over time. The 2020–21 season involved 26 teams split into four groups. Recent editions, such as the 2025 season, use 14 teams divided into two groups of seven. The top two sides from each group advance to semi-finals and a final.

Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club holds the record for success with two titles, won in 2021–22 and 2022–23. Other recent winners include Sinhalese Sports Club, Ace Capital Cricket Club, and Colombo Cricket Club. The participating teams, including Badureliya Sports Club, Moors Sports Club, and Nondescripts Cricket Club, are historic amateur clubs. These institutions play a vital role in developing talent, feeding players into provincial and franchise teams across the country.

The tournament is distinct from the Lanka Premier League, which is a franchise-based Twenty20 competition. It also differs from the Major League Inter-Club Tournament, which is a first-class event. The focus remains on nurturing local talent through structured limited-overs cricket.
