About
The SLC Twenty-20 Tournament, branded as the Major Clubs T20 Tournament, stands as the premier domestic Twenty20 club competition in Sri Lanka. Organised by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the tournament sits at the top of the country’s domestic cricket pyramid. Unlike franchise-based leagues, this event features traditional clubs such as Nondescripts Cricket Club, Moors Sports Club, and Colombo Cricket Club. Participation is by invitation, determined by club infrastructure and past performance, with no formal promotion or relegation.
The competition format typically begins with a group stage followed by knockout rounds. In recent editions, teams have been divided into groups, with the top sides advancing to quarter-finals. The tournament has faced interruptions in its history. It was suspended between 2008 and 2013 when a provincial format took precedence, and later paused due to the introduction of the Lanka Premier League. It resumed as the primary club competition in the 2014-15 season and has remained continuous since then.
Historical success is shared among established institutions. Sinhalese Sports Club and Nondescripts Cricket Club are noted as among the most successful clubs in the tournament's history. Recent winners include Nondesports Cricket Club, who claimed the 2024 edition, and Colombo Cricket Club, who held the title in 2025 after defeating Panadura Sports Club in the final. A key distinction from other domestic competitions is the player pool, which is restricted primarily to domestic Sri Lankan players rather than featuring overseas stars through auction systems.
The structure ensures that the tournament remains distinct from the provincial Inter-Provincial Twenty20 and the city-based franchise league. It provides a platform for traditional cricket clubs to compete against one another in a high-intensity Twenty20 format. The competition continues to serve as a vital pathway for domestic players within the Sri Lankan cricketing system.
