Dutch Lions

Ousman Saho Football Field holds 1,000 people in Busumbala, and it is still the ground on the fixture list even though the club opened a second home, Dimphy's Memorial Football Complex in Faroba Bantang, in January 2026. League matches have stayed at Busumbala regardless.

The side did not start life under its current name. It entered Gambia's Second Division in 2021 as Medical FC. In August 2023 a Gambian-Dutch group led by Kemo Ceesay bought the club and renamed it Gambian Dutch Lions FC. Ceesay had played for the Gambia national team and for two German clubs, FC Carl Zeiss Jena and 1. FC Lok Stendal, before taking over as owner and chief executive of a side he had no previous connection to.

Coach Omar Cham took charge of the newly renamed team and built its promotion around defence rather than goals: third place in the 2023/24 Second Division, and only 17 conceded in 34 matches, the tightest record in the division. A playoff campaign followed, and Dutch Lions reached the GFA League First Division for the first time in the club's history.

Brikama United, from the neighbouring district, is the fixture the local press reaches for when it wants a rivalry to describe, though no settled name has attached itself to the meeting. Gambian papers call the club the Lions or the Dutch Lions rather than any fixed nickname.

Everything else about the club has turned over since 2023 — name, ownership, division. Busumbala and its 1,000-seat ground have not.
