Steve Biko

The GFA League First Division title of 2013 remains the only time Steve Biko FC has stood at the top of Gambian football, achieved under coach Abdoulie Bojang, the same man credited with discovering a teenager named Yankuba Minteh. The club dropped out of the top flight the following season and has spent recent years in the second-tier GFF Division One, working through financial difficulties.

Founded in 1978 in Bakau, the club took its name from Steve Biko, the South African anti-apartheid activist, and plays its home matches not in Bakau itself but at the Serrekunda East Mini-Stadium, a 5,000-capacity ground. Supporters know the side as the Bakau Giants Killers. Home colours are yellow shirts with black trim, white shorts and sky-blue socks; the away kit switches to sky blue throughout.

Minteh moved on from Bakau to Newcastle United and later Brighton & Hove Albion, wearing the Gambia shirt along the way. Adama Bojang left for Strasbourg, and Sainey Ceesay built a career in German football. None of that changes what still stands as the club's other major honour: the 2000 Gambian Cup, won on penalties against Wallidan FC, 4-2, after the sides had finished level at 1-1.
