Hawks

Pull on a Hawks shirt in Banjul and the sleeves come out white against a red body, red shorts below, white socks to finish — the kit that gave the team its nickname, the Red Boys, long before anyone thought to write the colours down for the record.

The club was formed in 1973, its clubhouse set not in central Banjul but in the neighbouring suburb of Kanifing, and it has played in the Gambian top flight, the GFA League First Division, ever since.

Three league titles sit on the record — 1992-93, 1995-96, and 2021-22, the last arriving twenty-six years after the second. The cup run goes further back and comes more often: four Gambia FA Cup wins, in 1982-83, 1995-96, 2005-06 and 2016-17. In 1995-96 Hawks took both trophies in the same season, the league and the cup together. A Gambia Super Cup followed in 2017; a second, in 2022, appears in some records and not in others.

Continental football has called on Hawks four times — 1984, 2007, 2016 and 2018 — and none of the trips carried the club past the first round.

Hawks are still in the GFA League First Division, the same competition that produced their most recent championship in 2021-22.
