Before it existed, the city already had a team, Avante Esporte Clube, founded in 1950 and active in state competitions through the 1960s. It eventually disappeared, and no formal link ties the two sides together, but Quixadá Futebol Clube was founded on 27 October 1965 and has represented the city ever since.

A win in the Campeonato Cearense's Segunda Divisão in 1967 sent Quixadá up to Série A, and it stayed there almost without interruption until 2000, the one gap coming in 1981, when the club paused for financial reasons before returning to action. Fourth place, in 1997 and again in 1998, was as close as it came to the state title itself, which has never been won. The club dropped into the access division in 2001, and by the early 2020s had stopped playing altogether, suspended from professional football. It returned in 2024, winning the Série C and earning passage back to the Série B.

Home matches are played at the Estádio José Antônio Abílio de Lima, known locally as Abilhão, which holds 5,000 people under the club's yellow and blue.

Pedro Julião Azevedo Júnior, who came through Quixadá's ranks and turned professional in 2005 as Juninho Quixadá, is one of the players produced by the academy. He made his name abroad at Bulgaria's Ludogorets Razgrad, playing Champions League football, before returning to Quixadá in January 2026 to close out his career. At Ludogorets alone, he played 172 matches and scored 42 goals.
