Juazeiro do Norte already had two clubs with claims on local loyalty, Guarani Esporte Clube going back to 1941 and Icasa dating to 1984, when Juazeiro Esporte Clube took shape on 12 October 1998 as football in the city was reorganised around a third name. The under-20 side carries that identity into the Cearense youth championship.

The Market Lion, as the club is known, plays at Estádio Adauto Moraes, known locally as Adautão and owned by the Juazeiro municipal prefecture, holds 8,000, split between seated and standing areas, and is also used by Sociedade Desportiva Juazeirense.

Honours in Juazeiro do Norte belong to Icasa, whose Cearense title in 1992 was shared three ways with Fortaleza and Tiradentes, and whose Copa Fares Lopes wins in 2014 and 2021 sit alongside three Série B titles.
