The team traces back to Centro de Treinamento Uniclinic, a training-centre side set up in Fortaleza on 7 March 1997 that only later grew into a club carrying its own name. Under that Uniclinic banner it had already made its mark before the rename: the Campeonato Cearense Sub-20 title of 2002, shared with Fortaleza, sits alongside an earlier one won in 1994 as Tocantins Futebol Clube. It was not until 2018 that the club settled on Futebol Clube Atlético Cearense, the name it plays under now.

The eagle nickname, Águia da Precabura, points to the Lagoa da Precabura near the club's base rather than to anything won on the pitch, and it has outlasted several changes of shirt. The side wore yellow, purple and orange until 2015, then blue and white for a season, before switching in 2017/2018 to the red, black and white still in use.

Home games are played at the Estádio Antônio Cruz in the Lagoa Redonda neighbourhood, known locally as Domingão da Precabura, holding around 3,000.
