The club that plays in Sobral under the name Vila Real Futebol Clube did not begin there. It began in Fortaleza, as Centro Esportivo União, and it stayed a Fortaleza club for more than four decades — long enough to win the Campeonato Cearense Série C in 2017. In May 2025 a group of businessmen bought União outright and gave it a new name. The launch was made official on 23 May 2025.

What travelled with it was a licence and a place in the Campeonato Cearense Série C — the same third division União had won eight years earlier. What did not travel was the record: the 2017 title belongs to the club as it was, and the Sobral version has yet to add anything of its own at senior level.

Vaqueiro is the nickname that took, ahead of Real and Rei do Norte. The colours are red and yellow, with red dominant at home.

The ground is the Estádio Municipal Plácido Aderaldo Castelo, which almost nobody in Sobral calls that; it is the Junco, or the Juncão, and it holds 10,000.

Alongside the senior side the club entered a squad in the Campeonato Cearense U20.
