Nova Rölfsson arrived from Sweden in 2025 as a striker with nothing to compare herself to at Viking: no foreign player had worn the women's shirt before her. That she signed at all says something about where the club had got to by then — a side that had spent 2018 and 2019 winning its group and losing the play-off, before finally going up in 2018 and then, in 2023, winning 2. divisjon outright to reach the second tier.

Viking FK Kvinner was formed in 2011 as the women's section of the Stavanger club, and for most of its life has stayed exactly where that description suggests: amateur, unglamorous, playing out its results in the lower divisions. There is no championship, no Cup win, nothing to hang on the wall. The best run in the Norwegian Cup is a quarter-final, reached in 2024, the same year the team finished fourth in 1. divisjon. In 2020 the club said it intended to professionalise in stages and eventually reach Toppserien; the fourth-place finish four years later is the clearest sign yet of progress toward that, without being the thing itself.

Magnus Meling has coached the side since 2023, having previously worked at Fredrikstad, and it is his group that took the team into the second division. The captain through 2024 and into 2026 is Nora Heggheim. The crest tells its own small story of indecision: red background with white detailing, switched to dark blue between 2020 and 2022, then switched back — the club settling, eventually, on the colours it started with. They play at what is now called Lyse Arena, renamed in 2025, a 15,900-capacity ground that dwarfs the crowds a second-division women's fixture actually draws.

The fixture that matters is against Bryne, some 40 kilometres down the road in the same county of Rogaland. It is known locally as the Rogalandsderby, and it has outlasted an old rival: talks with Avaldsnes over some form of cooperation went nowhere, leaving Bryne as the name that still means something on the calendar.
