Cruz Azul saw off New York City FC 2:1 in the League Cup group stage on Saturday night, the visitors' early advantage eroded by a second-half response. The visitors took the lead through M. Murray just before the interval, but the hosts turned it on after the break to snatch victory.

Palavecino gave them hope with a goal in the 35th minute, though Murray answered almost immediately after the restart. Two yellow cards in quick succession for Freese and Cavallo framed that opening spell, and by then the game had taken on a different character.

Paradela's strike in the 78th minute shifted things, and the hosts saw it out despite City FC pressing. A. Palavecino was substituted off in the 82nd minute, replaced by C. Rodriguez on the hour mark as the hosts looked to manage the closing stages.
