Ferrol sits on the Galician coast, and for nearly three decades its women's basketball has run through one club. Club Universitario de Ferrol was put together on 27 December 1997 by Leopoldo Ibáñez, Jesús Victoria Meizoso and María José López, after the city's previous team, Clesa, had folded and left a gap they set out to fill.

The club has spent its history moving between the top flight and the tier below it, dropping down after financial trouble and working its way back with the LF Challenge title in 2022–23. Regionally there is little contest: seven Copa Galicia wins, five of them in a row between 2013 and 2017, against a Celta de Vigo side whose meetings with Ferrol are still called the Derbi Galego.

None of that prepared the city for the 2024–25 season. Baxi Ferrol reached the final of the EuroCup Women, a European final no Galician club had played before, and lost it to ESB Villeneuve-d'Ascq LM on an aggregate score of 162–145. Carla Leite was named Final MVP.

But it is Lino López whose name is tied hardest to the club's rise — coach since its early days, still on the bench when Ferrol reached a final.
