Belén Arrojo took bronze with Spain at the 2018 World Cup, and her name is one of two that Gernika can attach to the national team. The other is Ángela Salvadores, who also played for Spain and was picked in the WNBA draft. Grace Berger was drafted too. All of them played in a hall that holds 925 people.

The club reached the top flight quickly. It won the second division, Liga Femenina 2, in 2013–14 and went up in 2014. Two years later came the first of four Basque Cups (Euskal Kopa), followed by 2020, 2024 and 2025. In the Copa de la Reina, Gernika reached the semi-finals in 2016–17 and kept knocking on the door: 2018–19, 2020–21, 2021–22 and 2022–23 brought four more last-four places. The 2021–22 season was the best of them. The team also reached the quarter-finals of the EuroCup, its furthest run in that competition. The Liga Femenina title and the Supercopa de España have not come.

Visiting teams have to deal with the room as well as the roster. Maloste is the sort of ground people call a bombonera, a small box in which the noise sits close to the court. Its most familiar visitor is La Salle Bilbao, and the meeting between them is a derbi in Basque basketball.

On sponsors' paperwork the team is Lointek Gernika Bizkaia. The name it started with in 1996 was Gernika Kirol Elkartea Saski Baloia, a basketball society set up in a Basque town.
