The federation behind the national team, FECAFOOT, was founded in 1959, three years after Cameroon had already played its first international, a 3–2 defeat to what was then Belgian Congo.
Five Africa Cup of Nations titles, taken in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017, sit alongside an Olympic gold from Sydney in 2000, won on penalties against Spain after the match had finished 2–2. Neither, though, matches what happened at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where Cameroon became the first African side to reach the quarter-finals, beating Argentina in the opening match and then Colombia before England found a way through.
No one since has carried the shirt quite the way Samuel Eto'o did: 56 goals for the national team, top scorer of the tournament when Cameroon won the 2000 Nations Cup, and a name still invoked whenever a young forward is asked to fill the same role.
