About

The Major League Tournament is the premier first-class cricket competition in Sri Lanka, serving as the country's top tier for multi-day club cricket. Organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, the tournament has deep historical roots, tracing its lineage back to 1938 when it began as the Daily News Trophy. It was established by the Daily News newspaper, which was founded by D.R. Wijewardena. The competition attained official first-class status during the 1988–89 season, cementing its place in the national sporting landscape.

The current structure features eighteen teams split into two groups of nine. Clubs compete in a round-robin format within their groups, with the group winners advancing to a single four-day final to decide the championship. This format ensures a rigorous contest among the island's leading cricketing entities. The participating clubs include Badureliya Sports Club, Moors Sports Club, Nondescripts Cricket Club, Colombo Cricket Club, Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club, and Colts Cricket Club, alongside others in the wider pyramid.

Singhalese Sports Club holds the record for success in this historic competition, having secured thirty-two titles. Nondesports follows with sixteen championships. The competitive nature of the league is further defined by the existence of promotion and relegation between Tier A and Tier B of the structure, ensuring that performance determines status. The 2024–25 edition was won by Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club.

While the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament serves as the premier fifty-over domestic competition, the Major League Tournament remains distinct in its focus on the traditional six-day match format. It stands as the primary vehicle for developing and showcasing first-class cricket talent within Sri Lanka's club system.
