Cancún lost 1-2 to La Paz in the sixth round of the Liga de Expansión MX Apertura on Thursday evening. U. Jaimes had given the hosts a commanding start with two goals inside thirteen minutes, but a second-half collapse handed the away side all three points. The result leaves Cancún in thirteenth place with six points from five games, while La Paz move up to sixth with ten points after six matches.
By then the match was already turning. Jaimes opened the scoring in the thirteenth minute and doubled the lead three minutes later, putting Cancún in control before the quarter-hour mark. The visitors looked disorganised, struggling to find their shape against a home side that was running riot in the final third. It seemed as though Cancún would cruise to victory.
Then the momentum shifted. Torres was shown a red card in the thirty-seventh minute, and the home side suddenly found themselves playing a man down. To be fair, La Paz did not immediately capitalise, but the tactical balance of the game had changed completely. Cancún had to reorganise, and the visitors began to breathe.
The visitors finally broke through in the seventy-seventh minute when J. Rodriguez found the net. The goal changed everything. Cancún, now reduced to ten men, pushed forward desperately but could not find an equaliser. Rodriguez's strike was the moment that decided the match, and from that point on it was a matter of survival for the away side.
Statistically, Cancún dominated. They registered 126 attacks compared to 81, and held 56 per cent possession. They also mustered nine shots on target against six, yet the numbers do not tell the whole story. The red card meant they could not sustain their early pressure, and La Paz made the most of their limited opportunities.
The result means La Paz extend their unbeaten run to four games, while Cancún's recent form continues to struggle. They have won two of five but have now lost their last two league outings. The gap between them and the top half remains significant.
