AD Cofutpa

Estadio Jorge Palmareño Solís holds 4,000 people, which suits a club that plays its football away from the capital, in the coffee country of Alajuela province. AD Cofutpa is built around Palmares, the town that gives the team its nickname, Palmareños, and its reason for existing on the second tier of Costa Rican football rather than chasing a bigger stage.

The club dates to 2012, formed under the full name Asociación Deportiva Comisión de Fútbol de Palmares — a name that still shows in the COFUTPA initials worn on the badge. It has stayed in the Liga de Ascenso since, without a promotion or a trophy to show for it. The closest it has come to a headline run was in the Copa de Costa Rica in 2019, when Cofutpa reached the quarter-finals, a distance the club has not matched since in the domestic cup.

What Cofutpa wears is harder to pin down than what it has won. Match reports describe an all-white kit, and the club has also put out a red-and-black shirt as a one-off, a design that nodded to Atlas of Mexico rather than to anything in Palmares' own history. Neither has settled into a fixed identity the way the ground has.

There is no reservoir of former internationals or continental nights to draw on here; Cofutpa's story so far is the Liga de Ascenso grind, season after season, with the quarter-final of 2019 standing as the one result worth pointing to. For a club not yet fifteen years old, that is still the shape of the whole record.

Estadio Jorge Palmareño Solís remains the constant through all of it — modest in size, tied to the one town, and still the place where Cofutpa's Segunda División fixtures are decided in front of the crowd it was built for.
