Before three World Cups in Brazil's yellow shirt, Careca wore green and white in Campinas, coming up through the same academy that now fields Guaraní's Sub-20 side. Goalkeeper Valdir Peres had gone the same way a decade earlier, called up for the 1974 tournament and two more after it, and Mauro Silva, Ricardo Rocha and Amaral also left this youth system for Brazil's senior side.
Keeping that pipeline running is the point of the Sub-20 team. It plays in the Campeonato Paulista Sub-20 and trains at Guaraní's own Centro de Treinamento, built across the road from the club's main stadium so the youth categories can host their matches there without touching the senior pitch. In 2021 the side reached the quarter-finals of the state championship before losing to Ferroviária; in 2023 and 2024 it returned to the play-offs, at times finishing top of its group.
The senior club behind it was founded on 2 April 1911 and plays out of Estádio Brinco de Ouro da Princesa, opened in 1953. Capacity now stands at 29,130, well down from the 52,002 who packed in for a match there in 1982. Nicknamed Bugre, Guaraní won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1978 under coach Carlos Alberto Silva, then took the Série B title in 1981.
That quarter-final finish remains the furthest the age group itself has gone.
