Match report

Anderlecht and Genk played out a goalless draw in the Jupiler Pro League's fifth round at Lotto Park on Saturday evening. The result leaves both sides with a single point from the fixture, though the table positions tell a slightly different story. Anderlecht sit 11th with seven points after five matches, while Genk occupy eighth with eight. We had backed the hosts to win earlier this week, confidence sitting at 45 per cent, but this match refused to bend that way.

The opening minutes carried a certain nervousness, the kind you see when teams are still finding their rhythm. And here's the thing, it was not a case of either side dominating from the whistle. By then, you could already sense the pattern — Anderlecht keeping the ball, Genk sitting compact and waiting. Oliver Antman received a yellow card in the 20th minute, a reminder that this would not be a free pass for anyone.

Anderlecht pressed higher in the second half, bringing on Tawfik Bentayeb, Danylo Sikan and Noa Ojea together in the 65th minute. It was a clear signal that the hosts wanted to change something. Genk responded with Jeppe Erenbjerg, Rafiu Durosinmi and Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, trying to disrupt the flow. To be fair, both sets of changes failed to produce a breakthrough, and the game settled back into its cautious groove.

The statistics tell a familiar tale. Anderlecht enjoyed 54 per cent possession, registered 113 attacks and created one big chance. Genk had 74 attacks, zero big chances and managed only two shots on target from six attempts. Four shots on target for the hosts, four off target — chances went begging on both sides. The goalkeeper for Genk made four saves, while his counterpart at Anderlecht had to beat two. Not much separation between them on paper.

What matters more than the numbers is how the game unfolded. Anderlecht dominated the middle third, completing 305 passes into the opposition half compared to Genk's 225. But dominance without penetration is just movement. Genk cleared 31 balls and made 18 tackles, doing enough work to stay in the game. They did not have to be flashy — just disciplined. And by the 84th minute, when Antman was subbed off, it was clear neither side would find a winner.

The result keeps things level between two sides that are not far apart in the standings. Anderlecht will look at the one big chance they created and wonder what more was needed. Genk will be content to hold firm, especially after that heavy 4-4 draw against Anderlecht earlier in the season. There is nothing dramatic here, nothing that changes the shape of the table. Just two teams finding each other in a draw.
