SDE Hockey V hosted Shellefteo AIK Women in the SHL on Monday, and the visitors grabbed a 1:2 victory to keep their slim hopes alive. The result means the home side's recent momentum came to an abrupt halt, while the away side dug in for something they thought they'd missed.
SDE had looked solid at home earlier in the campaign, but by then the visitors had already shown they could trouble the top sides. Shellefteo turned it around after the break, and the home defence, flat-footed for too long, simply could not recover. The match was decided in moments, not minutes, and SDE found themselves punished when it mattered most.
Both sides enter this fixture level on zero points after five games, though the table positions tell a different story. SDE sit fifth with three wins, Shellefteo tenth with just one. The gap between them is smaller than the standings suggest, and this result brings them together early in the standings race.
Recent form adds context to the outcome. SDE had won three of their last five, including a clean sweep against Frölunda, but lost 0:3 to Brynäs on Thursday. Shellefteo, meanwhile, had lost four of their last five, dropping 0:3 to Järfällan and 1:2 to Linköping before this trip. Neither side travelled to make up the numbers, but only one walked away with points.
The scoreboard does not tell the whole story, though. We had given a home win, 59 per cent confidence, and the match went the other way. Shellefteo did not come for a cross they never reached — they came for the moments, and they took them. The draw brought them together early, but this was not a draw. It was a statement.
