VK České Budějovice Women

Three seasons in a row, České Budějovice's women took the 1. Getting there took the whole run, not one campaign.

The team traces back to 2009, when it was set up under the Volleyball Club České Budějovice umbrella. For nearly a decade afterwards it played under the name VK Madeta České Budějovice, after its sponsor, and locally it is still known as Women of Jihostroj, a nod to the same backer that has stayed with the club through its various names.

Andrea Prokešová's return summed up what the club had lost and regained: a former Czech national team captain and five-time national champion, she came back to České Budějovice after three years away, giving the side a player with a title pedigree from elsewhere in the country. Alongside her, Aneta Fornbaumová's promotion from the academy at 19 pointed the other way — proof the club was producing its own rather than only importing experience.

The fixture against VK ČEZ Karlovarsko has carried the weight of a derby for more than ten years, the history between the two sides adding an edge that league position alone does not explain.

What the three 1. liga titles have not turned into is silverware at the very top: no Extraliga crown and no Czech Cup sit alongside them, leaving the club's honours board built on the level below the one it now plays in.
