Match report

Chicago Fire and Inter Miami shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Soldier Field on Wednesday evening. The MLS Regular Season matchday 24 fixture ended with both sides earning a point, though the visitors had done most of the work on the ball. Robert Lewandowski gave the hosts the lead early, only for Carlos Henrique Casimiro to restore parity after half-time.

Lewandowski found the net in the tenth minute, capitalising on a moment of space in the box. By then, Miami were already pressing high, their full-backs pushing forward while the midfield tried to pin the home side back. The goal shifted the game, and Chicago held their nerve when the visitors came at them. Telasco Segovia picked up a yellow card in the fourth minute, a warning that came early and set the tone.

Round the twenty-minute mark, the game had settled into a rhythm. Chicago were comfortable in their shape, playing the second half a man up in spirit if not in numbers, while Miami worked the ball around looking for openings. Maximiliano Falcon went into the book at twenty-four, and the visitors' control was growing. They passed into the final third more than the hosts combined, but the chances remained elusive.

Casimiro's equaliser in the forty-eighth minute changed everything. Things came to a head after the break, and Miami finally broke through. Jonathan Dean was booked at fifty, and Chicago had to dig deep. Three substitutions came in quick succession — Robin Lod, Dean and Maren Haile-Selassie — as the home side tried to hold on. Germán Berterame went into the book at seventy-one, but Chicago defended resolutely.

The statistics tell one story, the result another. Miami had 56 per cent possession, 126 attacks to 74, and seven shots on target against three. Their expected goals stood at 1.37 to Chicago's 0.83, yet the visitors converted nothing from their big chances. Shots accuracy was higher for Miami at 35 per cent, but Chicago's goalkeeper made six saves compared to two. Things came to a head when the visitors finally found the breakthrough, but Chicago had already done enough to avoid defeat.

Chicago sit fourth with 39 points from 23 games, while Inter Miami are second on 44 from 24. The draw extends Chicago's unbeaten run to four matches, though they remain two points behind the leaders. One mistake ends it in these games, and neither side gave their opponent a clear path through.

We had backed Chicago for victory at 50 per cent confidence, but the match went differently. Miami's control was never quite matched by penetration, and Chicago held firm when it mattered. The table goes out of the window in these games, but the points are what count.
