Tizona Burgos

Burgos already had a club called Tizona in the 1970s and 80s. The side that now uses it began differently: in 1997 as Autocid Ford Burgos, a team drawn from the youth academy of C.D. Maristas de Burgos. Four years later it became independent and took the name Club Baloncesto Atapuerca.

Under that name it won the LEB Plata in 2006, having taken the Copa LEB Plata the year before and again in 2006. Then came 2013, when things came to a head. Atapuerca earned promotion to the top-tier Liga ACB on court but could not meet the financial requirements to take the place. A new one, Club Baloncesto Tizona S.A.D., was created to carry on.

The new club kept winning the regional cup. The Copa Castilla y León came in 2013 and 2014, after an earlier win in 2008. The LEB Plata title returned in 2023, this time as UBU Tizona, together with another Copa LEB Plata.

The club plays in blue and orange at El Plantío, where 2,432 seats can be extended to 3,150 for major games. Tony Smith is the player the club chose to honour: his number 8 shirt has been retired. Across the city, San Pablo Burgos provides the opposition for the Derbi Burgalés.
