Washington Spirit Edge Portland in NWSL Group Stage Clash
Portland Thorns hosted Washington Spirit at Providence Park on Saturday evening, and the visitors emerged with a 1:2 victory in the NWSL Group Stage. It was a match that turned on two penalties and a late goal that settled the tie. By then, the visitors had already shown they could respond when needed.

Portland created two big chances but could not find the net again.
Portland remain fifth in the table with 22 points from 22 games, while Washington sit second on 40 points. The gap between them is now 18 points, and this result may well have let the tie slip further for the hosts. The visitors' defensive discipline was the difference, with 19 clearances and 13 interceptions.
And here's the thing — we had given Portland a 40 per cent chance of winning. The match went another way, and it was the visitors' ability to punish from a corner and the spot that made the difference. Cup football has its own rules, and this was a reminder of that.
