Match report
Cruz Azul saw off Atlas 3-1 in the opening fixture of the Liga MX women's Regular Season on Friday evening. The hosts took an early lead through F. T. Huerta R. in the twenty-second minute before B. Cruz pulled one back for the visitors six minutes later. And here's the thing — Atlas never looked like they'd take the points back after that.
It was a game of moments rather than sustained pressure. Cruz Azul dominated the attacking third with sixty-one attacks to Atlas's thirty-six, and they made their count when it mattered. Five shots on target against just one for the visitors tells you where the danger lay. To be fair, Atlas had their chances but couldn't convert.
The second goal came in the eighty-eighth minute through D. Calderon, and you could see the visitors' legs going. Four substitutions in the final ten minutes — K. Flores, D. Mendoza, M. Leon, and V. Acevedo — were desperate measures. By then the result was more or less written.
A. Martinez added the third from the spot in the ninety-fifth minute, and the statistics back up what we saw on the pitch. Cruz Azul's thirty-eight percent shot accuracy compared to Atlas's fourteen percent shows they were far more clinical. Possession was even at fifty-fifty, but possession means nothing if you're not doing anything with it.
The win moves Cruz Azul off the bottom of the table with nine points from six games, while Atlas remain fourteenth on five. Neither side has found consistency yet, but the hosts at least showed they could finish what they started.
