Monterrey women claimed a 2-1 victory over Tijuana in the opening fixture of the Liga MX regular season on 2 August. The result leaves Monterrey firmly in the top three while Tijuana remain in the lower half of the table.
K. Hancar opened the scoring for the hosts in the tenth minute, but J. Seoposenwe responded just nine minutes later. The visitors took the lead and never really looked back from that point.
V. del Campo extended the advantage for Monterrey in the sixty-ninth minute, putting the game beyond doubt. By then she had already collected a yellow card on 90+1, though that hardly mattered for the final score.
Both sides made several changes as the match wore on. Tijuana brought on D. Fuentes early in the second half, while Monterrey introduced C. Burkenroad and T. Carter together in the seventy-fifth minute. A. M. Marroquin and A. Soto came on for Tijuana later, with the replacements doing little to alter the outcome.
The statistics told a fairly even story. Both teams registered forty-two attacks, though Monterrey held possession at 53 per cent. Shots on target were nearly level at four for Tijuana and five for Monterrey, yet the visitors converted their chances more efficiently.
The win takes Monterrey to third place with fifteen points from six games. Tijuana sit twelfth on six points after two wins and four defeats, a gap that feels wider than the scoreline suggests.
