Mariehamn is the only town on the Åland Islands. IFK Mariehamn began in 1919 as a general sports association set up by shipyard workers and local community figures, with a football section following some years later. Until 1945 the team played almost exclusively within Åland's own local competitions before entering the Finnish national leagues, and it did not turn fully professional until 2009.

Locally it is known as Grönvitt , after its green-and-white colours, and also as Saarelaiset — the Islanders. Because no other Åland side has reached the Veikkausliiga, IFK Mariehamn has no natural derby partner in the top division.

The high point came in 2016, when IFK Mariehamn won the Veikkausliiga title.
