Universidad de Concepción

Promotion has come to Universidad de Concepción more than once. In 1997, three years after the professional side was formed, the club won the Tercera División outright and moved up to the next level. It reached the top flight for the first time in 2002, not by winning Primera B but by finishing second, which was enough that year to send it up. In 2024 the club topped the Segunda División and moved up to Primera B.

The professional club was founded on 8 August 1994 as the sporting arm of Corporación Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepción, under the presidency of Marcos Israel. It carried on from an amateur side, Club Deportivo Universitario, which had played from the 1940s into the 1960s and took a regional title in 1962.

Home matches are played at the Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo, known locally as Estadio Collao. The club has also used the smaller Estadio Municipal Federico Schwager for Copa Chile fixtures and other matches. In January 2025 the team switched its shirt to a purple design. Supporters and press call the side El Campanil, though León de Collao is also used officially.

Fewer years later, the club's own academy produced Ángelo Henríquez, a striker who moved on to European football and the Chilean national team.
