Central Córdoba de Santiago and Independiente met in the Clausura round eight of the Argentine Professional League on Saturday evening, and the visitors claimed a narrow victory thanks to a single goal. Leonardo Godoy broke the deadlock in the fifty-seventh minute, and that proved enough on a night where Central Córdoba controlled possession but could not convert their dominance into goals.
By then, the hosts had accumulated 11 corners and 66 passes into the final third, yet they created no big chances. The visitors, with 46 per cent possession, were more clinical — four big chances created against zero for the hosts. And here's the thing about matches like this: the statistics tell one story, the result tells another, and they rarely agree.
Independiente changed shape at the break, or at least that's how it looked from the stands. They pulled five substitutions by the final whistle — Santiago Gabriel Montiel, Leonardo Godoy, Mateo Pérez Curci among them — while Central Córdoba made three changes, including Ezequiel Naya and Maximiliano Meza. Facundo Zabala received a yellow card in the ninety-third minute for the visitors, and that was the only booking of the match.
To be fair, Central Córdoba dominated the numbers. They completed 309 passes against 272 for Independiente, and their expected goals figure stood at 1.36 compared to 1.78 for the away side. But shots accuracy tells a different tale: 17 per cent for the hosts against 33 per cent for the visitors. Five shots on target each, but only one found the net.
The result leaves Central Córdoba in thirteenth place with 16 points from 16 games, four wins and four draws. Independiente move to fifth with 24 points, though their recent form has been uneven — three wins, two draws, and two losses in their last five matches. They had lost 3-0 to Gimnasia in their previous outing, so this was a chance to build momentum.
For the hosts, it was another disappointing evening. They had beaten Unión Santa Fe 2-1 just two weeks ago, and a victory against Independiente would have lifted them well clear of the bottom half. Instead, they remain eight points off safety, and the line has barely moved since August.
We had given Central Córdoba as a 46 per cent chance for the win, but the match went differently. The visitors showed more composure in the final third, and Godoy's goal — his second substitution on the evening — settled matters. The old head settled them down, perhaps, or maybe it was simply that Independiente had nothing to lose by sitting deep and hitting on the counter.
