The hosts ran the show from the opening exchanges, burying University before the crowd could settle. To be fair, the scoreline told you everything about a match where one side simply outclassed the other.
Héctor Aldair Salazar opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and Pablo Labrin doubled the lead four minutes later. Agustin Gonzalez pulled a third goal in at the 19th minute, just before the yellow card for Jorge Murrugarra. By then the game was already slipping away from University.
Facundo Castelli added the fourth in the 58th minute, and the rest was a matter of management. University brought on Lisandro Alzugaray in the 60th minute, then Jairo Concha and César Inga together at the 69th. Garcilaso responded with six substitutions between the 76th and 89th minutes, rotating bodies while the result was never in doubt.
Here's where it gets interesting, and I'll say it straight: we had called for a home win at 41 per cent confidence before kickoff. That prediction came through. Garcilaso had nothing to lose, and they took the chance with both hands. University's keeper made eight saves, but the chances themselves were few and far between.
The statistics tell a story you already knew. University dominated possession at 54 per cent and registered 130 attacks compared to Garcilaso's 99. Yet the hosts were far more efficient, hitting the target 12 times against just two for the visitors. Shots accuracy sat at 63 per cent for Garcilaso and 20 per cent for University. Garcilaso move up to third place with 48 points from 27 games, while University remain second on 49 points. The gap between them is now a winning margin. University had beaten Alianza Lima 2-1 on their last outing and were unbeaten in five before this collapse. Garcilaso came off a 0-1 defeat to Sport Boys, so this was a statement as much as a result.
