Cruz Azul and Venados played out a 1-1 draw in the Liga de Expansión MX on Friday evening. S. Lora gave the hosts the lead in the thirty-eighth minute. He found space in the box and finished well, sending the home crowd into a brief celebration. It looked like Cruz Azul might be on course for all three points.
C. Jimenez levelled things just before half-time, in the forty-fifth minute plus one. The Venados striker reacted quickest to a loose ball and slotted past the goalkeeper. By then the momentum had shifted, and the visitors suddenly felt dangerous.
There were cards coming thick and fast after the interval. I. Silva and I. Dominguez picked up yellows in consecutive minutes, followed by K. Palacios and A. Dominguez later on. The referee had his work cut out keeping things under control.
Coaches made changes looking for an edge. E. Sanchez was brought off in the sixty-seventh minute, while Venados responded with a double substitution at the same time. Later Ochoa Brandon came on for E. Torres, and C. Jimenez was replaced by P. Kilani in the eighty-seventh.
Cruz Azul dominated possession at 62 percent and created three big chances, but only converted one. They took eighteen shots with five on target. Venados were more efficient with their shooting — eight attempts, five on target — and looked dangerous on the counter.
The result leaves Cruz Azul fourteenth with seven points from eight games. Venados sit eighth on ten points after seven matches. It was a fair outcome for both sides, and neither team will be unhappy with a point.
